Does My Cat or Dog Need a Tooth Extraction?
As a pet owner, it can be difficult to know if your furry friend needs a tooth extraction. The best option is to bring them to a veterinary surgeon for an assessment and they will guide you. It is important to know, that in mouths that have a lot of tartar it may not be possible to determine if they need any, or many, teeth removed until they have been professionally cleaned and examined whilst under an anaesthetic.
What is Dental Disease?
Dental disease is a common reason why pets require tooth extractions. If dental disease is left untreated, it can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss. Some of the most common dental diseases in pets include periodontal disease, gingivitis, and tooth decay. If you notice that your pet has bad breath, swollen gums, or is having difficulty eating, it's essential to take them to a veterinarian for an oral exam.
Why Do Tooth Extractions Help?
Infected gums are painful, damaged teeth often have exposed roots, and these are equally painful. Tooth extractions help pets by removing these diseased or damaged teeth.
If a pet has a tooth that is severely decayed or infected, it can cause pain, discomfort, and even lead to more significant health issues. By extracting the tooth, the veterinarian can prevent the spread of infection and relieve your pet's pain. Additionally, extracting a damaged tooth can prevent it from causing further damage to surrounding teeth and gums.
Ultimately, prevention is better than cure, so if you notice any signs of dental disease in your pet, even just bad breath, it's essential to take them to a veterinarian for an oral exam. If a tooth extraction is necessary, it can help prevent further health issues and relieve your pet's pain.
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
A Dental Examination would need to take place, and if required and with your consent we would do the necessary tooth extraction(s). A dental examination and tooth extraction would be done as a day patient. The pet would be brought to us in the morning, undergo a full general anaesthetic, and go home that day once they are fully recovered.
HOW MANY VISITS ARE REQUIRED
Dental care is a life-long requirement. Individual procedures will take a single visit, such as tooth extractions, but regular check-ups and guidance may be needed depending on the level of dental health your pet has.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
All our prices can be found on our price list.
We operate a fixed price procedure*.
*The fixed prices do not include supportive fluid therapy or a presurgical blood test. Both of these are strongly recommended for pets over the age of 7 years, and would benefit all patients undergoing an anaeshetic.
**In some instances all extractions will not be able to be carried out safely. This will require a multi-stage procedure and will have a total repeat cost.
