What is dermatology in cats and dogs?

Veterinary dermatology specialises in diagnosing and treating skin, ear, hair, and nail disorders in dogs and cats, commonly including allergies, infections, autoimmune diseases, and parasitic infestations.

 

What are common symptoms that require dermatological care?

Within Dogs:

  • Itchiness

  • Paw licking

  • Ear infections

  • Hair loss

  • Crusty or smelly skin

Within Cats:

  • Overgrooming

  • Hair loss

  • Crusty or flaky skin

  • Excessive furball production

 

What to expect during a dermatology appointment?

Preparation – A pre-visit questionnaire will be provided prior to the appointment to obtain information about your pet’s condition. 

Duration of initial visit – 1 hour for initial consultation, involving an in-depth discussion of your pet’s skin disease history, clinical examination, some initial skin samples and a written report. 

Some conditions require additional sampling, anaesthesia, biopsies or sending samples to an external laboratory. If this is required, we will discuss it with you and an estimate will be provided.

What dermatology equipment is used in veterinary?

The dermatology equipment we use for our appointments are:

  • In-house microscopy for immediate diagnosis 

  • Otoscope

  • Blood testing for hormonal conditions and treatment of allergic conditions 

  • Surgical suite and nursing team for sedated diagnostics and anaesthetised ear flushes and skin biopsies

Maddie, a postgraduate certificate-holder in dermatology, has a passion for helping pets experiencing a wide range of skin, fur, and nail conditions. By gaining this additional qualification through further study, Maddie has acquired the tools necessary to correctly diagnose and treat your pet’s skin condition.

  • Initial consultation with sampling: £300

Dogs:

  • Itchy dog, allergy testing, without immunotherapy vaccine: £1,500

  • Itchy dog, allergy testing with immunotherapy vaccine: £1,800

  • Crusty/bald dog, biopsies: £2,000 

Cats:

  • Itchy cat / hair loss (alopecia) work up without immunotherapy vaccine: £950

  • Itchy cat /  hair loss (alopecia) work up with immunotherapy vaccine: £1,250

  • Itchy cat / hair loss (alopecia) with sedation & tests: £2,000

Diagnostic Tests

  • Skin scrapings – microscopic examination: £49.63

  • Cytology (ear swab, tape strip or impression smear): £48.00-£54.00

  • Nextmune PAX molecular Testing Environmental Allergens: £535.20

HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?

This will depend on the type and severity of the pet’s skin condition.

HOW MANY VISITS ARE REQUIRED

1 hour for initial consultation, involving an in-depth discussion of your pet’s skin disease history, clinical examination, some initial skin samples and a written report. 

Some conditions can be solved with one visit, but many require ongoing management. Revisit consultations will be 20-40 minutes.
